Virginia General Assembly Information

About the General Assembly. The Virginia General Assembly meets in the Virginia Capitol Building every January. The Virginia General Assembly is the oldest continuously serving legislative body in the Western Hemisphere. The legislative body was established in Jamestown in 1619 as the House of Burgesses. In 1699, the town of Williamsburg was established and the legislative body began meeting in the colonial Capitol of Williamsburg. In 1780, during the administration of Thomas Jefferson, the legislative body became formally known as the Virginia General Assembly and moved to Richmond. The General Assembly is composed of two governing bodies, the Virginia House of Delegates consisting of 100 members, and the Senate of Virginia consisting of 40 members.
